From The Beating Line: The Wrong Trousers And What To Wear Instead
By the end of drive one my ‘water-resistant’ trousers were water logged and by the end of the day, I was left wishing I packed some spare knickers.
This season has been a very wet one so far. My first day of the season coincided with the lovely Storm Babet and I very much decided to dress for the weather I wanted and not for the actual conditions.
Setting The Scene
By the end of drive one my ‘water-resistant’ trousers were water -logged and by the end of the day, I was left wishing I packed some spare knickers. To add insult to injury, my previously toasty shooting socks had absorbed water and resulted in puddles forming in my chams.
I had a bright idea to take off my trousers and put on the spares I had hastily packed in the morning which seemed easier than it actually was. Cue my pale bottom bobbing around by the back car door trying my hardest to pull trousers on wet legs and failing miserably. Defeated, I resorted to wearing my picnic blanket fashioned round my waist like a sarong with the help of my polo belt and my boyfriend’s wellies that he’d left in the car.
Back To The Drawing Board
Let’s just say that my priority once I’d hung my game and had a shot of bramble whisky was to get on the internet in search of trousers. As a lady beater, I find the range of waterproof trousers very limited and cut as though I was a 6ft French supermodel and not a short, dumpy bumpkin. I decided to go down the over-trouser route.

No, I’m not sure why they’ve been given such an exotic name but I adore these over-trousers. They’re lightweight enough not to feel like you’re shuffling about but still thistle proof and hard wearing. They dry almost instantly between drives and cost a fraction of the ‘proper’ waterproof trousers on the market.

At under £15 I am very impressed with these trousers. They’re slightly thicker than the Sioen ones and very reminiscent of my high school art apron but will be ideal for frosty days later in the season where I need the extra barrier!
The moral of the story is that the Norwegians were definitely correct when they proclaimed that there is 'no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing'.
